Clashes in Alexandria, Shots Fired As Mubarak Refuses to Step Down, Obama Responds

UPDATE: In a brief speech, Obama called for an orderly and « meaningful » transition in Egypt that he said should « begin now. » Obama, who said he spoke with Mubarak following the Egyptian President’s statement earlier today, also commended the Egyptian military for eschewing violence and praised protesters.
UPDATE: The sound of gunfire could be heard in the live footage broadcast on Al-Jazeera from Alexandria following Mubarak’s speech. A reporter on the scene said the military fired shots into the air in what appeared to be a response to clashes between anti-Mubarak protesters and Mubarak supporters. Read more…
Clashes break out in Alexandria

Clashes have broken out between anti-government protesters and supporters of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in the city of Alexandria as millions urge the president to step down.
Opposition protesters say government forces and the police opened fire on demonstrators, but there are no reports of casualties so far.
The army sent in tanks and armored vehicles to break up the clashes, which were seen circling the city’s Mahatit Masr Square. read more…
