Violence erupts in Karachi after killing of ANP, MQM men

KARACHI: A senior workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and another of the Awami National Party were killed in what appeared to be the year’s first targeted attacks motivated by political consideration, followed by arson attacks on vehicles and incidents of firing in different parts of the city on Monday night, police said.

Adil Akhtar Jafri, 35, was heading to the MQM office in the Nazimabad area on a motorbike when two armed motorcyclists targeted him near a fuel station at the Inquiry Office bus stop, the police and party sources said.

The victim was the Nazimabad-Gulbahar joint sector in charge of the MQM, said Wasay Jalil, a spokesman for the party. He said Adil Akhtar Jafri was unmarried and a resident of the Golimar area. More…

Killing of a senior MQM leader today in a target killing sparked violence in Pakistan’s commercial capital, sparking tension and riots in some parts of the city in which seven people lost their lives.

Adil Jafri the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) joint sector in-charge of Gulbahar area was shot dead in Nazimabad late evening by unknown assailants.

The target killing sparked off tension and riots in some parts of the city with television channels reporting seven casualties as a result of the violence and arson with heavy firing reported from many areas.

A police official said that the patrolling by police and rangers had been increased in the troubled areas after miscreants put on fire some shops, banks and transport.

Many petrol pump owners decided to shut down their business voluntarily fearing more violence.

The MQM which split from the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party led government on Sunday to sit on the opposition benches called on the government to take notice of the targeted killing of another of their senior worker.

In Pakistan, at least eight people have been killed in riots in some parts of the port city of Karachi. Killing of a senior MQM leader sparked violence in Pakistan’s commercial capital.
