A POLICE chief admitted last night that he was caught off guard by the mayhem that erupted after thugs hijacked a demo of 50,000 students.

At least the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, had the good grace to immediately admit that his force mishandled yesterday’s protest demonstration in London against the trebling of tuition fees and the cut in university funding. He was not exaggerating when he said that the police response was inadequate and embarrassing.

LONDRES — Des étudiants ont fait mercredi pendant cinq heures le siège de l’immeuble abritant le QG du Parti conservateur à Londres, où ils ont pénétré par la force quand a dégénéré une manifestation sans précédent contre le triplement des frais universitaires, a constaté l’AFP.
