1 dead, over 20 hurt in clashes after results

One person was killed and about 20 others were injured in three separate incidents of violence that occurred between supporters of rival candidates after the announcement of results in the panchayat elections on Friday.

In a clash in Gyanpur police station area of Sant Ravidas Nagar (Bhadohi), Mukhtar Ahmed (55), a supporter of Asha Singh, a pradhan candidate from Jhingurpur village, was killed during the celebrations being held for Singh’s victory.

SP Gyaneshwar Tiwari said a clash occurred when defeated candidate Nisha Mishra’s husband Panna Lal and other supporters argued with Singh’s supporters. In the clash, Ahmed died and six others were injured.

In Gonda district, Tarabganj Circle Officer Rajmani Mishra said seven persons were injured in a clash that occurred between family members and supporters of the elected pradhan of Tikri village panchayat Meena Singh and her defeated rival Seema Singh.

Bhadohi (UP), Oct 29 (PTI) One person was today killed and seven others were injured when supporters of a candidate defeated in panchayat polls allegedly attacked a house of the rival group, police said here.

Muktar Ali, supporter of Jangli Singh, whose wife has won the election for the post of Pradhan (village head), was killed when supporter of the defeated Kanahiya Mishra group attacked his house in village Khingurpur in Gyanpur police circle, they said.

Seven others were injured in the heavy brick batting and have been admitted to a hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable, they said.

Senior police officers have reached the spot toprevent any untoward incident.

An FIR has been registered in this regard against five persons.


Gyanpur is a town and a nagar panchayat in Sant Ravidas Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
