Stone-pelting in Godhra

VADODARA: Riots broke out between members of Vora and Ghanchi communities in Godhra on Tuesday evening. A dispute over getting a rented shop vacated is said to have been the reason that triggered off the episode.

Stone-pelting was reported in Nava Bazaar area of the town when some persons tried to get a shop in the locality vacated by using force. They faced resistance and a squabble followed, eventually leading to rioting in the locality.

Panchmahal district superintendent of police J R Mothaliya said that the shop was owned by a person from Ghanchi community who had rented it out to a trader from Vora community. « A group went to the shop to get it vacated leading to a dispute that eventually led to stone pelting, » he said.

Mothaliya said the rioting was brought under control immediately by a posse of policemen, who had rushed to the spot. Mothaliya said that mild lathicharge was used to quell the violence. « We have increased vigil and security in the locality has been beefed up, » he added.

Godhra is a town and originally the name came from « Gou » which means « Cow » and « Dhara » which has two meaning one in Sanskrit which means « Hold or Land » and the other in Hindi which means Flow. So, identically it means The Land of the Cow, a municipality in Panchmahal district in Indian state of Gujarat. It is the administrative headquarters of the Panchmahal district.
