1 killed as groups clash over illegal mining

JAIPUR: Illegal mining of gravel from Banas river became a serious law and order situation in Tonk on Thursday as a 39-year-old man was beaten to death in a clash between two groups.The clash occurred when some people were trying to make a temporary road through agriculture farms to reach the river so that the illegally mined gravel could be transported.

Hundreds of villagers are organizing a sit-in for the past two days demanding arrest of over 100 men allegedly involved in killing him. Two groups of people are at loggerheads over mining from Banas river for the past one year. Though mining is illegal, it is going unabated in this area.

According to the police, the clash occurred at Lahan village early on Thursday morning. Kaluram Bheel with some other people was involved in making an alternative road to reach Banas river when another group of people – also suspected to be involved in mining – reached there and objected to it.  Read more…
