The countrywide day-long hartal (general strike) enforced by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party opposition alliance passed off amid detentions and sporadic clashes in the city and elsewhere in the country Thursday.
Police arrested a number of Opposition leaders during the hartal hours including BNP’s education secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon.
The main opposition BNP and its 17 allies called the nationwide shutdown to protest detention of 33 ofalliance leaders on charge of an arson attack during last month’s general strike.
BNP’s acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the second top leader of the party after its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is one of the detained leaders.
The pro-hartal activists exploded six handmade bombs and damaged somevehicles during the hartal hours at different points of the capital city
Police detained Khokon and two other opposition activists in front of their Nayapaltan central office at around 9:00am while former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation Mizanur Rahman Minu sustained injuries as he was engaged in a scuffle with the law enforcers to protect Khokon from detention.
