Mob clashes with Howrah cops

HOWRAH: A minor accident triggered hours of violence in Howrah in which a pregnant woman was injured along with six policemen and several locals.

The wife of an IPS officer was learning to drive when her car brushed against an elderly man. Police say her driving instructor took control of the vehicle and the pedestrian wasn’t injured. But the incident sparked protests by hundreds of local residents who clashed with police and tore the uniform off at least one officer.

Sixteen persons were arrested for rioting, assaulting policemen and attacking the officers’ wife. In the melee, Shibpur OC Zulfiquar Mollah’s gold chain and wireless set were reportedly stolen and uniform ripped.

The place is still simmering with tension and a large police picket has been posted to prevent further trouble. Read more...
