Arrests and Clashes Downtown as May Day Protests Spread

Occupy Wall Street members staged a series of protests around New York City on Tuesday. Here, arrests were made on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Updated, 3:53 p.m. | The police arrested protesters on the Williamsburg Bridge, at a park on the Lower East Side and near Washington Square Park Tuesday afternoon as the May Day protests organized by Occupy Wall Street gathered steam. The morning’s protests in Midtown, outside banks and other businesses, had been well attended but more subdued.

Around 3 p.m., a crowd surged out of Washington Square Park carrying a banner that read “On Strike.” Officers shouted for protesters to remain on the sidewalk, but several protesters holding the banner stepped into the middle of Avenue of the Americas, where several officers — including one in plain clothes who had appeared to be marching with the crowd — tackled and arrested them.Read more…
