Clashes hit Sylhet-Dhaka highway

Dhaka, Apr 18 (bdnews24.com) – Fierce clashes between police and BNP supporters, who blockaded a 30-km stretch of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway protesting the ‘disappearance’ BNP organising secretary M Ilias Ali, have left 22 arrested and 10 injured.

Two policemen were among the injured during the clash and a police shotgun went missing but was recovered afterwards.

Two bouts of clashes broke out between BNP activists and police at Rashidpur Bazar in South Surma in Sylhet. Police brought the situation under control by firing tear gas shells.

Traffic resumed around 2:30pm, nearly five hours after the demonstrations started. The five-hour halt has created massive congestion on the highway. Read more…
