At least 150 arrests in violent Montreal protest

Clashes between anti-police brutality protesters and riot squads left behind a trail of destruction in Montreal Thursday night after demonstrators smashed shop windows and vandalized police cruisers.

The annual rally quickly turned violent when some protesters threw rocks and other projectiles at police, who lobbed sound and flash grenades into the crowd. Police confirmed they also used « chemical irritants » – likely pepper spray.

About 150 people were reportedly arrested, but the final tally could be higher. Police declared the protest illegal shortly after it began.

An estimated 1,000 demonstrators marched through the city core before they broke off in smaller groups and eventually dispersed.

Numerous businesses have been vandalized and there were also reports of looting on some streets. Some buildings and emergency vehicles were spray painted.Read more…
