BAKU: Police in Azerbaijan used tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters after they torched a local governor’s house on Thursday, in a rare outburst of unrest in the tightly controlled state, reports and an eyewitness said.
Locals in the ex-Soviet state’s northern city of Quba set fire to the governor’s house in outrage at a recent televised remark that they deemed to be insulting, an eyewitness told. Both the governor Rauf Habibov and Azerbaijan’s Transport Minister Zia Mamedov apologised before protesters for the remarks, which alleged that Quba residents sold their property to Azerbaijanis from other regions to get rich.
But a crowd of thousands insisted the governor must resign and then torched his house. Police then used tear gas to disperse them, the witness said. Azerbaijan’s APA news agency reported that several protesters were arrested after clashes with police that left several people injured on both sides.
The crowd later reassembled outside the local police station demanding the release of the arrested protesters. They were all later released and the rally dispersed in the afternoon.
A local administration source, who asked not to be named, said that the governor has now been sacked and an official statement would follow later in the day. Read more…

La région de Quba (azéri : Quba rayonu) est une unité administrative au nord de l’Azerbaïdjan. Le centre administratif est la ville de Quba.
Au milieu du XVII siècle a été formé le khanat de Quba, dont le centre était Khudat et plus tard Quba. Á l’époque de la règne du fils de Husseynali khan, Fatali khan (1758–1789), l’influence du khanat de Quba était forte. En 1806, le khanat de Quba était subordonné à la Russie et transformé en province. Le district de Quba a été inclus au gouvernement de Derbent, et en 1860 – au gouvernement de Bakou. En 1930, avait été fondé la région de Quba, l’une des régions administratives de l’Azerbaïdjan.
