Supporters of the former head of the Youth League of South Africa’s governing African National Congress have clashed with his rivals after the fiery politician was expelled by the party for bringing it into disrepute.
Overnight clashes started on Wednesday in Julius Malema’s hometown of Sheshego in northern Limpopo province, according to the SAPA news agency.
Shots were fired when a caravan of anti-Malema demonstrators brandishing a cardboard tombstone with the words « RIP Julius » and « corrupt dictator » descended on the street where he had gathered supporters ahead of the ANC’s ruling.
The pro-Malema camp blockaded the road, triggering a clash with their rival. Reports said stones were hurled at a police car when it arrived to separate the rival groups. read more…
