Kenya Polytechnic students riot over fees

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 28 – Students at the Kenya Polytechnic University College on Tuesday staged a demonstration paralysing traffic on the busy Haile Selassie Avenue and later Harambee Avenue and Taifa Road.
The students were protesting an increase in fees by the institution.
Motorists and passersby using the road bore the brunt of the violence as police delayed in their response to contain the chaos.
“Kenya Polytechnic is poorly managed and there is a lot of tribalism and nepotism there and we have come here so that it can be resolved quickly,” one of the protesting students said.
“The school is so shameful that it does not even have chairs. As a University institution, this is unacceptable!”
“There is unnecessary fee increment. Fees increase every night. When you wake up and go to class, you find the fee has been increased,” he added.
They are now calling for the sacking of the principle who they say has contributed to the degradation of the institution. Read more…
