ATHENS (Dow Jones)–Greek riot police clashed with youths at a demonstration in central Athens late Sunday as thousands of Greeks protested in separate rallies against austerity measures promised to international creditors in exchange for further aid.
The protests come on the eve of a crucial meeting in Brussels of euro-zone finance ministers, who are expected to approve a second bailout for the debt-ridden country.
Late Sunday, the office of Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said he was also traveling to the Belgian capital, without providing any further details. According to a Greek Finance Ministry official, Papademos’s presence was deemed necessary to be in close communication with Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos on any crucial decisions that may need to be made quickly.
