Vendors spark clashes in Cairo’s Tahrir Square

Clashes broke out in Tahrir as street vendors allegedly fought each other with bladed weapons and Molotov cocktails over spaces to sell their wares

Street vendors in Tahrir Square had a verbal spat that developed into violent clashes on Saturday afternoon, during which several protesters were caught in the middle.

The sellers reportedly used bladed weapons, hot water and even Molotov cocktails against each other while fighting over spots to ply their trade in the square.

Two female tea sellers had a verbal exchange before they started fighting each other. Shortly afterwards, each group of sellers brought a gang to Tahrir and the clashes erupted.

It was reported that some of the troublemakers fought with the protesters who are staging a sit-in in Tahrir. There are no confirmed injuries. Read more…
