Srinagar, Feb 10: Clashes broke out between police and protestors in Maisuma here on Friday after the later attempted to take out a rally on the eve of 28th death anniversary of founding member of JKLF, Muhammad Maqbool Bhat. Five cops were injured in the clashes, police said.

The protestors had planned a march towards the UN office at Sonawar here to demand return of Bhat’s mortal remains for burial.

Though police said Section 144 CrPC is in operation in the city, the protestors tried to defy the restrictions, triggering police action. The clashes led to stone-pelting by a group of youth from the interiors of Maisuma, which was responded with firing of tear smoke shells by police, reports said.

Constable Shabir Ahmad received severe injuries, police said. The situation was tense in the area since early hours. However, after clashes broke out the otherwise busy market of Maisuma and nearby areas shut down in protest against the police action.

Maqbool Bhat was hanged on February 11, 1984 after he was sentenced to death in a murder case and was buried in the premises of Tihar Jail in Delhi. Read more…
