Teen injured in election clash

Balangir/Berhampur: A teenager was severely injured when goons fired indiscriminately during a clash over a panchayat poll issue in Sonepur’s Kamsara on Friday. Tikeswar Bibhar (15) has been admitted to VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla. Three persons, who were attacked with sharp weapons received minor injuries.

Tikeswar is the son of a candidate contesting for panchayat samiti member. The goons are suspected to have come from Balangir. « After they reached the village they had a clash with the rival group. In the indiscrminate firing, one bullet from a country-made pistol hit the right arm of the boy. The goons fled the village after the firing, » SP (Sonepur) Dasarathi Naik said.

He said two sections of police force have been deployed in the village. The SP said the attack was the result of simmering tension between two groups over withdrawal of nomination papers. Sources said the two groups had decided to sponsor candidates. Later, they decided not to do so. While one withdrew her candidature, the other didn’t. The clash took place to settle scores.
