Police opened fire on Tibetan protesters in China on Monday, killing at least one person and injuring scores of others, a rights group and the Tibetan government-in-exile said.
The demonstration comes at a tense time in Tibetan-inhabited regions of China, where 16 people have set fire to themselves in less than year – many of them young monks – in protest at perceived religious repression.
Citing eyewitnesses, Free Tibet and the India-based government-in-exile said the protest began on Monday in Sichuan province’s Draggo county, which has a substantial ethnic Tibetan population, and was ongoing.
The London-based rights group said Tibetans from the nearby counties of Serthar and Tawu were reported to be travelling to Draggo to join several thousand demonstrators, adding that up to 30 people had already been injured.
Calls made to local government and police offices went unanswered.
The unrest comes after at least four Tibetans self-immolated this month to protest against perceived religious repression and a lack of freedom, bringing the number of Tibetans to have set fire to themselves since March to 16.
According to sources cited by Free Tibet, the demonstration in Draggo began in response to the arrest of Tibetans over pamphlets that were distributed in the area calling for freedom in the region.
The pamphlets also reportedly warned more Tibetans were ready to self-immolate. Read more …
