Occupy Oakland protesters arrested after clashes with police

Thirteen Occupy Oakland protesters were arrested Friday after a series of confrontations with officers, police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.

At around 1 a.m. Friday morning officers were called to Frank Ogawa Plaza on reports that protesters were attempting to set up a tent, Watson said.

Protesters did not comply with officers’ demands to take down the tent and three were arrested, according to Watson.

Ten more protesters were arrested Fridat afternoon when, shortly after 2 p.m., public works crews arrived to clean the north side of the plaza, near where activists have erected a teepee and a food station, and protesters refused to allow them to clean, Watson said.

Watson said officers were called in to assist and protesters became « hostile and violent towards police. »

Some activists spit at officers, threw a chair, and engaged in physical altercations, Watson said. Read more…
