Six hurt in Saharsa as mob clashes with cops

SAHARSA: Over half-a-dozen persons, including some policemen, were reportedly injured in a ding-dong battle between angry students and policemen after a schoolboy was crushed to death at Shanker Chowk in Saharsa town on Thursday.

Police opened several rounds of fire in the sky to disperse an unruly mob of students which went on rampage when one of their colleagues, Prashant Kumar, was crushed to death by a truck. Pashant was a student of Manohar High School and a resident of Simaraha near Saharsa, sources said.

In Patna DGP Abhayanand told TOI that one student was hit by bullet in his arm but was out of danger. « The police opened fire to disperse the mob in a restrained manner. Some policemen were also hurt in heavy brickbatting, » he said. Peeved at how the truck was allowed in the no entry zone at Shanker Chowk, the students ran amok and set the truck on fire. The angry students became violent when a posse of policemen arrived at the spot. They pelted stones at them and even attacked the nearby police station, informed sources said. It is the administrative headquarters of the Saharsa District, and is in the Kosi Division. Sahrasa is also the name of the assembly constituency, which contains the city and neighboring parts of the district. The origin of the name Saharsa is unknown.
