At least two protestors reported to have been killed in clashes with police over riots relating to a new gold mine on Sumbawa island in Indonesia
At least two people were killed and eight wounded in clashes between protesters and police during demonstrations over a planned gold mine in eastern Indonesia, police said.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in the town of Bima in the West Nusa Tenggara province on Sumbawa island, disrupting port and ferry services.
The gold mining project is a joint venture between Indonesia’s PT Sumber Mineral Nusantara and Australian-listed Arc Exploration Limited, according to the Arc Exploration website (www.arcexploration.com.au).
The company said in its June quarterly report no exploration work was possible in the quarter because of protests.
Women and children were among protesters who have barricaded roads and the town’s port since Monday and a police station and a government office were burnt down, police spokesman Saud Usman Nasution said in a statement. Read more…

Les petites îles de la Sonde occidentales, en indonésien Nusa Tenggara Barat, constituent une province d’Indonésie. Elle est composée de la partie occidentale des petites îles de la Sonde, bordée à l’ouest par le détroit de Lombok, au sud par l’océan Indien, à l’est par le détroit de Sepadan et au nord par la mer de Java. Sa capitale est Mataram sur l’île de Lombok.
Les deux îles principales de la province sont Lombok avec 4 739 km2 de superficie et Sumbawa avec 15 414 km2. La population de la province était de 3,8 millions d’habitants en 2001.
Sumbawa is an Indonesian island, located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain, with Lombok to the west, Flores to the east, and Sumba further to the southeast. It is in the province of West Nusa Tenggara. Sumbawa is 15,448 km2 or 5,965 sq mi (three times the size of Lombok) with a current population of around 1.33 million. It marks the boundary between the islands to the west, which were influenced by religion and culture spreading from India, and the region to the east that was not so influenced. In particular this applies to both Hinduism and Islam.
