According to the action’s coordinator Mikhail Kanev, the authorities declared the free entrance for students to cinemas and a skating-rink for the time announced on social networking websites as the time for a meeting.

The organizers were arrested before the meeting – some of them were arrested while leaving their houses, the others were arrested earlier allegedly for an unpaid fine or for dodging military service. Kanev himself and several more LF activists were detained on the street while approaching the square but they were set free after the identity check and recording the data. The street lamps were switched off on the square.

Despite all counteractions of the authorities over 1000 people came to the Teatralnaya Square in Syktyvkar. They shouted: “We insist on re-elections; New Year without Putin; Down with the police state…”

The policemen immediately began to catch and arrest all those who tried to take the floor. Then special purpose police units joined them. They began to drag any persons out of the crowd and arrest them. Then the protesters were forced out of the square to the traffic way. The people didn’t go home.
