MANILA—Rights group Karapatan hit the alleged violent dispersal of some 1,500 protesters in Manila on Tuesday afternoon.
Led by students from different colleges and universities, the protesters launched the first day of the Mendiola camp-out which will commence on December 10, International Human Rights.
However, Karapatan said students, teachers, health workers, and government employees were blocked by the police even before reaching Mendiola, which is near Malacañang.
Accounts from the protesters said that the police used water cannons against them and some were also clubbed by nightsticks.
Karapatan was likewise barred from setting foot at Mendiola on Wednesday morning, in another rally organized with urban poor organizations to condemn the continuous threats of demolition, price hikes, and lack of basic social services.
Parading pushcarts or the Filipino kariton, they marched through the interior streets of Sampaloc and held a program near Bustillos church, where they were blocked by the police and were disallowed from proceeding to Mendiola. Read more…
