Srinagar, Nov 25: Life remained disrupted in Kashmir on Friday due to a strike called by the Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, against the detention of minors, with clashes in old Srinagar leaving several people, including six pressmen, injured, even as nearly half-a-dozen youth were picked up by the police during the violence.
Media-men covering the street battles were thrashed for filming government forces beating up collared protestors on the spot, their association said.
Today’s strike closed down shops in the city’s main business centres, and kept public transport off the roads, but appeared to have little impact on the movement of private vehicles.
Most students stayed home, with private schools remaining totally shut, and government offices recorded thin attendance.
Normal life was also affected in many outlying towns, and inter-district transport services remained grounded.
The police kept Geelani under house arrest, citing apprehensions of law and order problems, a move the Hurriyat (G) denounced as political vendetta. Read more…
