Bangalore: A 20-year-old Second Year BE student in PESIT College in Third Stage Banashankari, Pranay Kumar AY, took his own life by hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room. He was found hanging on Tuesday morning by some employees of the campus food court who were passing by his room.
The college authorities said he had failed in a couple of subjects. But the death sparked spontaneous protests by the engineering college students who blamed study pressures emanating from insistence by the college authorities on the students to get high marks, the college timings, the poor hostel canteen food, and alleged severe restrictions for Pranay committing suicide. Banashankari (Kannada: ಬನಶಂಕರಿ), abbreviated as BSK is a neighbourhood in South Bangalore. It gets its name from the Banashankari Amma Temple on Kanakapura Road, one of Bangalore’s oldest and well known temples, which was constructed by Subramanya Shetty in 1915.[ Banashankari is the largest locality in Bangalore, extending all the way from Mysore Road to Kanakapura Road. It is bounded by Girinagar and Rajarajeshwari Nagar in the west, Basavangudi in the north,Jayanagar and J.P. Nagar in the east, and Padmanabhanagar, Kumaraswamy Layout and Uttarahalli in the south.
