SITRA — Clashes broke out between hundreds of protesters and police forces west of the Bahraini capital of Manama on Saturday after the funeral procession of a teenage protester.
Thousands of people took part in the funeral procession in the 16- year-old boy’s hometown of Sitra, despite a police blockade of the area to prevent mourners from reaching the funeral.
Police forces fired tear gas and stormed the area to prevent the protesters from reaching the main road. Activists said the boy, Ali al- Badah, was hit by a police car . The police said it was an accident. Two other people were wounded in the incident. Opposition groups say heavy-handed police tactics are worsening tension in the streets.
Hundreds of Shiites have been dismissed from their jobs over suspected roles in the protests and many remain in police detention. Scores of medical workers were last month jailed by military tribunals for helping injured protesters during the February 14 uprising. The sentences have since been sent for review by a civilian court.
The leading Shiite opposition group, Al-Wefaq, described the incident as a reflection of the dangerous tactics used by security forces to drive their cars at high- speed when dealing with protesters with disregard for safety and lives.
The liberal opposition group, Waad, condemned the incident and called for a halt to the killings and the group punishment of citizens. Read more…
