Srinagar, Nov 18: Violence broke out in Srinagar and Baramulla after Friday prayers during protests called by the Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, against facebook postings insulting Islam.
Stone-pelting erupted in the Maisuma quarter of the summer capital and in central Baramulla as protestors clashed with the police on being barred from holding a march, though the couple of other processions in Srinagar passed incident-free.
Geelani, who had called for peaceful protests in all mosques and shrines after Friday prayers against the offending cyber content, had been kept under house arrest with additional police deployment, his spokesman said.
In Maisuma, the police used cane charges when protestors refused to abort their march to Lal Chowk, chasing the slogan-shouting youth into the lanes and by-lanes of the congested area.
Intermittent clashes continued for several hours, with the police using tear gas to dislodge stone-pelting groups.
Reports said that two youth, Ishtiyaq Ahmad and Muhammad Idrees, were taken into custody during the violence.
Two other protests in the city, one in old quarter and the other in upper Srinagar, passed off peacefully. Read more…
