Occupy Portland protesters and police confronted one another in the streets today, as authorities around the United States tried to close down encampments occupied by demonstrators for weeks.
Up to a thousand protesters were in a standoff with ranks of Portland police officers in riot gear near the fenced-off parks the Occupy movement had been ordered to leave over the weekend.
About 15 demonstrators were arrested, but the confrontation was generally peaceful, observers said.
Face-to-face with the protesters, police repeatedly warned them of arrest or the use of chemical agents and impact weapons if the street were not cleared.
On their side, protesters chanted: « I don’t see no riot here, take off your riot gear, » « The whole world is watching, » and « We are peaceful people. » Read more…
