Dhanbad, Oct. 29: A three-hour-long clash over coal loading left eight injured at BCCL’s Aina colliery in Kustor today.

Labourers owing allegiance to Jharia ward councillor Rustom Ansari and JVM leader Gaya Pratap Singh clashed at gate number 8 of the colliery, about 6 km from the city, where coal lifting resumed today after 13 years.

Though there are several loading points, coal lifting had been suspended from this particular gate following frequent clashes in the past.

During the clashes that lasted more than three hours, more than 70 rounds were fired, resulting in bullet injuries to one person. Several crude bombs were lobbed, too. Among those injured were officer in charge of Jharia police station Binod Kumar Singh.

According to sources, the decision to resume loading from the gate was taken last evening by the two groups of labourers on the understanding that neither party would interfere in the other’s work. Read more …
