NEW DELHI: Communal riots in Aligarh, which resulted in 10 casualties on the first day, have spread to adjoining areas also, according to reports reaching here yesterday. Five more casualties and several incidents of stabbing in Aligarh and adjoining villages were reported on the second day of riots.

Reports of riots have also been received from Chandausi, a town about 40 miles north of Aligarh, where, according to a UP government press note issued at Lucknow, five people were killed yesterday after which a 24-hour curfew has been imposed.

In several other towns, including Agra, Hapur, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Daurala and Sardhana, police patrolling has been intensified and reinforcements have been rushed to these places as a precautionary measure.

According to The Times of India, authorities in Aligarh were secretive about information regarding conditions in certain areas of the town. Reports from these areas were “not encouraging”, the paper said.

In Meerut, Agra and some other towns, school and college students were organising processions to protest against the Aligarh Muslim University. In Meerut and Agra, they observed a strike yesterday. Read more…
