Two lawyers were shot dead while six others suffered gunshot injuries after a group of revenue clerks (lekhpals) and other staff of Mohammadi tehsil fired at them following a clash in Lakhimpur Kheri district on Saturday. About 35 persons were arrested.
Angry over the attack, lawyers ransacked the office of an Additional District Magistrate and damaged over a dozen government vehicles. The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry.
SP Amit Chandra said it was a sequel to an altercation between a lawyer, Shyam Babu Mishra, and revenue clerk Anter Krishna Awasthi on August 29, which led to a dispute between the groups.
On Saturday, the revenue clerks were holding a meeting on the issue on the tehsil campus when a group of lawyers arrived and started shouting slogans. The clerks came outside and both groups clashed. Police said some clerks fired at the lawyers. The two victims were identified as Pradip Dikshit and Mukul Tiwari.
