KARACHI: Nine people were injured on Monday during a clash between guards and employees outside the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) office building in the Phase II extension area of Karachi.

According to the Labour Union, the employees had come to collect their salaries before Eid but the guards stationed outside the office building exchanged harsh words with them and subsequently opened fire.

Later, KESC authorities called in the police to control the situation.

The police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, who insisted that they would not leave till they were paid. One tear gas shell landed in a nearby mosque.

SP Tariq Dharejo said one policeman sustained a bullet wound in the ongoing chaos. One police truck was torched during the clashes.

10 people have been taken into custody. Read more…
