Midnight clashes in parts of Old City

Clashes erupted between protesters and government forces in parts of Old City, here, after some youth, who had assembled outside Jamia Masjid, were picked up by the police, reports said.

Scores of youth were shouting pro-freedom slogans when a contingent of police arrived, they said.

In the melee that followed, reports said, some youth were picked up.

Clashes were going on at Nowhatta Chowk and Gojwara when this report was filed.

However, sources in the police said, « No one was picked up and some youth taking advantage of dark spread misinformation about arrests to create trouble. »

They said the police exercised restrain due to large congregation at Jamia Masjid on occasion of Shab-e-Qadr
