Srinagar, Aug 6: Violent clashes broke out in old Srinagar for the second consecutive day on Saturday even as parts of the area observed a shutdown against the alleged highhandedness of police and paramilitary CRPF.
Business establishments and shops remained shut in parts of old city like Nowhatta and Rajouri Kadal. The traffic movement was also thin.
Later protesters blocked the roads around Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta and Gojwara to protest against police and CRPF action yesterday.
The youth clashed with CRPF and police personnel who were deployed in strength to thwart any protest. In retaliation to stone pelting, the forces fired tear gas canisters and cane charged protesters to disperse them.
The clashes between forces and protesters were reported from Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal and Gojwara areas of old city. In Nohwatta, the youth pelted stones on the local police station. They said the police after ransacking several houses have taken many youth in custody. Read more…
