Clashes In Old City After Friday Prayers

Srinagar, Aug 05 2011, KONS: Nearly a dozen persons were reported injured in clashes with the police in old Srinagar during Friday protests called by Syed Ali Shah Geelani today against human rights violations and unwarranted detentions in Kashmir.
The police used tear gas and aerial firing at several places in Srinagar, even as demonstrations breaking out after Friday prayers in Sopore and a few other towns on Geelani’s call for peaceful protests.
In old Srinagar, forces deployments came under stone-pelting attacks in Gojwara, Rajouri Kadal, Kaw Dara and the Nallah Maar Road after the police and the paramilitary troopers attacked a procession from the central Jamia Masjid with cane-charges and tear gas.
The several-hours-long brick-batting, interspersed with aerial firing by the police, closed down many parts of the interior city after Friday prayers, severely disrupting traffic and pedestrian movement. Read more…
