Jammu, Jul 22 (PTI) Nine people, including four policemen, were today injured in clashes here during protests by National Panthers Students’ Union demanding that Central University of Jammu be made functional immediately. Led by JK NPSU vice president Pushvinder Singh Manhas, hundreds of students blocked the canal road in front of the GGM Science College and staged protest, which entered third day, against the state and union governments for their failure to make the CUJ operational by appointing its vice-chancellor. Students resorted to stone-pelting on passing vehicles and policemen, who were trying to disperse the protesters to allow smooth flow of traffic, officials said. In the subsequent clashes and cane charge by police, which continued for over two hours, nine people, including four policemen, were injured. However, the law enforcers managed to disperse the agitators. « We will intensify the agitation if CUJ is not made operational immediately. We will not be cowed down by the use of police force against us, » Manhas said, alleging discrimination against Jammu region by both the Centre and state government. « We appeal to the student community in particular, and public in general, to unite and prepare for the final struggle of reorganisation of the state which is the ultimate solution of the dispute of Jammu and Kashmir, » he said.
