Clashes break out in Kulgam, govt van set ablaze

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police this afternoon burst teargas canisters and fired warning shots to quell violent protests that broke out in Kulgam district of south Kashmir against the alleged abduction and gang rape of a woman by Amy men.

Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Dispatch that hundreds of people, mainly youth after offering Friday prayers took to streets at Manzgam and staged pro-freedom demonstrations. Chanting “We want Freedom,” “Islam Zindabad,” “Go India Go Back,” and anti-India, anti-Army slogans, the protesters tried to march to the Damhal Hanjipoa to express solidarity with the woman. However, the CRPF troops and police, deployed in advance, resorted to cane charge to disperse the marchers.

In retaliation, the protesters pelted rocks and stones on the forces triggering off pitched battle. Angry protesters set ablaze a govt van as the clashes turned intense. Read more…
