Srinagar: Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police on Wednesday used batons and pepper guns to quell demonstrations in Islamabad district of south Kashmir on the first anniversary of the three teenagers, who were shot dead by police during last year’s summer unrest.
Press Bureau of India correspondent from south Kashmir said that early morning, groups of youth assembled in Lazibal area of the district and staged pro-freedom and anti-India demonstrations. Chanting slogans, the youth were protesting the ‘cold-blooded murder’ of the three teenagers- Ishtiaq Ahmad, 15, Imtiyaz Ahmad Itoo and Shujat-ul-Islam, 17, son of Late Muhammad Ashraf Baba, a class 12th student of Anchidora by policemen on this day last year.
As the protesters tried to march through the streets of the town, CRPF troops and police intercepted them. Angry protesters hurled rocks and stones on the joint team sparking off clashes.
The forces used newly introduced pepper guns after they failed to disperse the protesters with cane charge. The clashes soon spread to Anchidora, SK Colony and other areas of the town.
Later, the forces sealed off all the roads, lanes and by lanes leading to the areas where youth held demonstrations.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in the town in remembrance of the three teenagers. All shops, government and privates offices, banks and financial institutions, schools and colleges remained closed throughout the day. Public transport also remained affected due to the shutdown, even as no pro-freedom or militant group had called for strike. Read more…
