At least six killed as ceasefire in Yemen’s capital unravels while president recovers from surgery after rocket attack on compound

A ceasefire in Yemen’s capital was at risk of unravelling today as regime supporters opened fire on opposition fighters in renewed clashes that left  at least six dead.

Three of the victims – loyal to tribal leader Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar – were reported to have been gunned down by snipers.

Last night, pro-government gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint manned by a military unit that defected to the opposition. Two of the attackers and one of the soldiers were killed.

The shootings took place in Sanaa’s district of Hassaba, where al-Ahmar’s residence is and which has been the centre of fighting over the past two weeks.

The violence erupted as President Ali Abdullah Saleh was recovering from surgery in neighbouring Saudi Arabia for shrapnel wounds he suffered in a rocket attack on his compound. Read more…

ARMED men killed seven soldiers and wounded 12 others in clashes in the southern Yemeni city of Zinjibar on Monday, a local official and witnesses said.

An army force had tried to storm the town, which has a population of 20,000. It is the capital of the flashpoint Abyan province in south central Yemen.

Last month, dozens of armed men, believed to be from al-Qaeda, stormed into Zinjibar, chasing out security forces while seizing several government buildings and setting off blasts in others.

The army had withdrawn from Zinjibar after a battle with militants in March, but later regained control.
