Belgrade, 27 May (AKI) – Serbian police clashed with demonstrators in Belgrade and elsewhere late Thursday as former Bosnian Serb military commander and top Balkans war crimes fugitive general Ratko Mladic made his first appearance in a Belgrade court following his arrest earlier that day.

Police said several people were injured and at least 35 were detained in the clashes in Belgrade and in the city of Novi Sad, capital of Vojvodina, the northern Serbian province in which Mladic was arrested after 16 years on the run. The arrest was hailed internationally.

Mladic, 69, wartime Bosnian Serb military commander, who has been indicted by the United Nations war crimes tribunal for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, was arrested early on Thursday in the Vojvodina village of Lazarevo, some 80 kilometres northeast of Belgrade.

He was hiding in the home of his relative Branko Mladic and the property had been under surveillance for the past two weeks, the police said.

Police minister Ivica Dacic said Mladic had two pistols, but did not resist arrest. Dacic denied earlier press reports that Mladic had false documents on the name of Milorad Komadic. Read more…

The demonstrators then threw rocks at the local office of the ruling Democratic Party (DS). Police appeared from the building, dispersing the crowd.

Two protesters were left lying on the street injured. Others fled in small groups, but gathered again in the town’s central square.

Reports said that there are about 100 demonstrators there tonight.

Earlier in the evening, they physically assaulted a man in front of the television outlet’s building, « after which a free-for-all broke out » said reports.
