As people took to the streets again against the worsening power crisis in the city, riots turned deadly with one of the protesters being allegedly killed by a police bullet. Meanwhile, there seems to be no reprieve for the people of the city after talks between the KESC and the 4,000 surplus employees of the power utility came to a complete standstill.

The protester was killed in the Chakra Goth of Ibrahim Hyderi when enraged locals came out to demonstrate against the prolonged power outage in their locality. The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Siraj, was reportedly killed when the police resorted to baton-charging and aerial firing to disperse the mob. However, one of the bullets struck the victim and he died on the spot.

His body was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for legal formalities. This was the first death recently reported in the city as a result of the power riots.

The riots also wreaked havoc in other parts of the city as two vehicles were reportedly torched in the Zaman Town and Burns Road areas. Some the protesters burnt old tyres and blocked the flow of traffic, while others vented their anger by pelting stones at oncoming vehicles. Read more…
