Riots have erupted this morning at Lubigi swamp in Nansana a Kampala suburb as the police evacuate people who have encroached on the swamp putting an illegal market.
Rioting people have blocked the Hoima road paralyzing traffic andbusinesses at the nearby trading centers.
The alleged encroachers say that the land in question was given to them by government therefore police has no right to evacuate them. They have asked government to relocate them because they have nowhere they will conduct their businesses from.
The Minister of Water and Environment, Miria Mutagamba says government will neither relocate nor compensate the encroachers.
She says that people have illegally occupied the land and they have been warned several times.
Mutagamba says that the President is not aware that people have occupied Lubigi swamp and he is the one who has ordered immediate evacuation of the encroachers.
