Clashes In Greece Amid Debt Default Fears

Greek riot police have clashed with protesters after more than 20,000 people took to the streets of Athens to protest against a new wave of state spending cuts.

Police teams used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse youths throwing stones and petrol bombs during a 24-hour general strike that brought most public services to a halt.

In one incident, a group of 150 hooded anarchists stormed into an Athens hospital and attacked three policemen who were called there after a protester was severely injured during the rioting.

At least 25 other people were also hurt in the demonstration.

The protest was sparked after Greek ministers ordered further tax hikes and pay and pensions cuts as they seek to keep the country’s sinking economy above water. Read more…

Violence has erupted in Athens during a protest at government austerity measures.

Hooded youths attacked police with stones and Molotov cocktails. Security forces responded with tear gas.

Peaceful demonstrators had turned out in their thousands to denounce the latest moves to cut the giant Greek budget deficit.

“They are destroying our lives. They are really destroying our lives with these measures,” said pensioner Helen Hollidou, taking part in the rally. Read more…
