Police block Maldives protest over food prices

Police in the Maldives have clashed with hundreds of protesters, preventing them from demonstrating in a square in central Male over soaring food prices.

Opposition-led demonstrators blame the government’s monetary reform policies for the rising cost of goods.

They are demanding the resignation of the President, Mohammed Nasheed, saying he has failed to solve the Indian Ocean archipelago’s economic problem.

The government says the protests risk harming the tourism-based economy.

Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem told reporters in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, that potential visitors might be scared away.

« Today, there is a planned big demonstration, which may go quite nasty, » he said before the protests began.

« So, police have taken appropriate action to prevent any damage to public property, damage to people, and to keep order in the country. » Read more...

MALÉ, Maldives — La police a bloqué vendredi des centaines de manifestants réunis dans la capitale des Maldives, Malé, interpellant plusieurs personnes participant à la protestation organisée par l’opposition pour dénoncer la hausse des prix.

Environ un millier de milliers de personnes s’étaient rassemblées sur une petite place après la prière du vendredi, pour demander au président Mohamed Nasheed de démissionner et dénoncer les réformes proposées par le Fonds monétaire international, qui ont provoqué une hausse des prix. (ANSA) – MALE’, 5 MAG – Continua ad essere tesa la situazione nelle Maldive dove nei giorni scorsi e’ scoppiata una protesta popolare contro il governo, ritenuto responsabile del caro vita e della crisi che attanaglia l’arcipelago musulmano, famosa meta turistica.

Le dimostrazioni, scoppiate cinque giorni fa sull’onda delle rivoluzioni dei Paesi arabi, hanno provocato finora circa 300 feriti in violenti scontri con la polizia, secondo quanto riporta la stampa locale. Decine sono stati arrestati.
