Srinagar, Apr 29: As Maisuma and adjoining areas of the city observed a complete shutdown for the second consecutive day on Friday, a peaceful protest demonstration was staged by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) activists to press for the release of party’s detained chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik.

Soon after the Friday prayers were over, JKLF activists, Maisuma residents and neighbouring shopkeepers took out a demonstration and gathered at Madina Chowk. The demonstrators raised pro-freedom slogans and demanded immediate release of Malik. They also demanded the authorities should immediately stop harassing and detaining youth, besides demanding release of detained people.

The demonstration dispersed peacefully, however it was followed by mild stone-pelting. The youth engaged the policemen and CRPF personnel in stone pelting for a brief period. The security personnel retaliated by firing tear gas canisters. Malik and his close aide Showkat Bakshi were arrested from Budshah Chowk on Thursday when they tried to stage a sit-in against the arrest of a local youth- who was charged by police of snatching money and beating up a cab driver.
