Dhaka – At least three people were killed in a series of clashes between ethnic minorities and Bengali settlers in the country’s south-east – the scene of a previous two-decade long insurgency.
Police and witnesses said the Bengalis, who had migrated to the Chittagong hills, also torched at least 40 homes belonging to the tribal groups and drive away residents of at least three villages in Khagrachhari district, some 260 kilometers from capital, Dhaka.
Dispute over land ownership is one of the major causes of conflict between Bengalis and the tribal groups in the Chittagong Hill area, a home to at least 15 tribes. Read more…
