Syrian security forces killed 26 people at the funerals of protesters killed in and around the southern town of Daraa the previous day, human rights activists said.

« Police and security services broke up peaceful demonstrations on Saturday by firing live ammunition, causing the death of 26 people, » six Syrian rights groups said in a joint statement.

The funerals had been held for 17 people gunned down in the southern agricultural town of Daraa, flashpoint of more than three weeks of anti-regime protests, and another 10 killed in surrounding villages on Friday.

(Reuters) – Syrian security forces used live ammunition overnight on Saturday to disperse a pro-democracy protest by hundreds of people in a Sunni district of Latakia, causing scores of injuries and possible deaths, residents said.

One witness saw water trucks hosing down the scene in the Sleibeh district of the city of Latakia, Syria’s main port, 330 km (210 miles) northwest of the capital Damascus.

Human rights groups decry actions as 37 people reported killed

Syrian security forces opened fire on mourners at a mass funeral on Saturday, after at least 37 people were reported killed in some of the country’s bloodiest anti-government violence so far.

Human rights groups said several people were wounded as police tried to disperse angry crowds in the southern city of Deraa, a major flashpoint for protests against President Bashar Assad. It followed clashes in the city on Friday as demonstrators poured on to the streets to demand greater political freedom.

The National Organization for Human Rights, a Syrian pressure group, said 30 people died in Deraa and seven more in other cities after security forces opened fire « indiscriminately. »

« What is happening in Syria is a flagrant violation of human rights, » the group said.

« Syrian security committed what could be called a crime against humanity. »

Early on Saturday, security forces also fired live ammunition to disperse protesters in the port city of Latakia, long regarded as the heartland of the ruling elite.

Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire overnight as security forces forcefully broke up a sit-in.

« The shooting went on for almost two hours -it was frightening, » said one. Read more…
