Police, Tibetan exiles clash, 21 injured

KATHMANDU: At least 21 Tibetan exiles were injured and four were detained after riot police intervened in the special prayer service being performed on the premises of Bouddhanath Stupa.

Thinley Gyaltso, the Dalai’s Lama’s representative in Nepal was reading out a statement of His Holiness on the 52nd anniversary of the Tibetan National uprising against Chinese invasion, which was to be followed by special prayer service when police broke into Samtenling Monastery and used force on hundreds of Tibetans at around 11:30 am.

Officials said 21 demonstrators were injured.

Police lathi-charged for half-an-hour to disperse demonstrators hoisting Tibet national flags, and wearing headbands and T-shirts reading ‘Free Tibet’. Riot police also kicked monks and nuns chanting anti-China slogans.

Tenzin, a Tibetan monk, accused the government of provoking the clash with the lathicharge on Tibetan exiles participating in the prayer service for the 14th Dalai Lama’s long life. Police bundled the Tibetans into a van and took them to Metropolitan Police Circle Bouddha.

Irate Tibetans had gone outside the monastery chanting anti-China slogans soon after police intervened in the prayer service and threatened to use force to disperse them from the monastery. Read more…
