NICOSIA, Cyprus — A Cyprus police spokesman says 32 people have been arrested after hundreds of football fans threw stones, knives and molotov cocktails in clashes with riot police ahead of local derby.

Michalis Katsounotos said Monday that tear gas was used to disperse the crowd of about 500 people who tried to enter Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca for a match between host Anorthosis Famagusta and Omonia Nicosia on Sunday.

The tear gas drifted over the pitch, forcing the referee to suspend play for about 30 minutes. Read more…

Katsounotos says it is the largest number of arrests that police have made in football-related violence.

The match ended in a scoreless draw, leaving Omonia seven points adrift of league leader APOEL Nicosia.
